Clearing the Path: Second Generation Barriers to Middle Housing
Casita Coalition’s Second Generation Barriers to Middle Housing webinar explored this next frontier in the middle housing movement. John Zeanah shared highlights of a report he authored for the Center for Building in North America called Beyond Zoning: Hidden Code Barriers to Middle-Scale Housing, addressing this question: What are the elements of current building codes, fire codes, stormwater rules, and utility requirements that can make smaller, infill projects infeasible to build–and how can we reduce or remove these barriers? Paul Runge and Tara Sorrels from Cascadia Partners presented case studies and common misconceptions about the impact of middle housing on sewer system capacity in their report Flush the Fear: Middle Housing Can Fit Within Your Sewer’s Capacity, sharing best practices for policymakers implementing middle housing.
2025 Webinar Series - Building the Middle
In 2025 we explored emerging middle housing solutions, looked at implementation challenges and highlighted best practices for ADUs and other middle housing types.
